I started a blog. It surprises me as I don’t know that I have that much to say to fill multiple entries. I’m hoping if nothing else, since I love to write, it’s another source of expression for me. To celebrate my first blog entry, I thought I’d share some of my loves.
Music. It feeds my soul. My palette of favorite genres is fairly large, with the exception of country, R&B, metal, and the like. While lyrics are meaningful and I enjoy singing, with the exception of praise music, my heart is stirred by the instrumental aspect of songs. It’s difficult to explain verbally, but the swirling notes embrace me like a warm blanket, drawing me into a world I don’t fully comprehend. My absolute favorites are based on minor scales; I love the slight imperfection and melancholy sound in the tunes. I feel emotions through music; happy, sad, joy, etc. It is a gift from the Lord and I know I will not fully appreciate or understand it until I am praising and singing to him in Heaven.
Books. I get excited in bookstores; the smells, sounds, worlds to be discovered. I have always adored reading, and though movies are exciting, nothing compares to the imagination and discovery found in books. Within fiction, my all-time favorite is Les Misérables. I don’t even know how to explain it, so will just strongly encourage you to read it, the unabridged version. I also adore Pride and Prejudice, To Kill a Mockingbird, and my new favorite, Redeeming Love.
Art. In all forms, not simply professional paintings. Of paintings, though, I particularly love Matisse’s papiers coupes and the impressionists’ work. Again, it is the imperfection that incites emotions in my heart. When you look closely you see swirling strokes, tiny dots, cut-up paper, whereas when you stand back a beautifully crafted picture appears. This greatly parallels how I view my walk with God. I am the imperfect lines, my sin and rebellion. However God, in his creative sovereignty, crafts those imperfections into a magnificent painting that is only completed when I return to him.
History. As a little girl I was obsessed with Little House on the Prairie and my favorite childhood book was Number the Stars. I then had a series of fabulous history teachers/professors who strung historical events together as a story, showing how we got to where we are. Historical fiction is my favorite genre of literature; I adore museums, learning, and the Old Testament. Oh and random fact, I learned to drive in the battlefields of the Revolutionary War.
France. Oh yes even the name and design of this blog seeps of my love for this culture. The language, food, history, architecture, and people excite me. Again, it’s hard to explain, but I think the above loves explain a bit of why it’s my favorite place I’ve never been.
That's it for now. Stay tuned for more insites into la vie de Sarah.
